The Berkeley/North East Bay Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union

Working to Protect and Advance Civil Liberties and Civil Rights in the North East Region of the San Francisco Bay (California, USA), including Albany, Berkeley, Crockett, El Cerrito, El Sobrante, Hercules, Kensington, Pinole, Richmond, Rodeo, Montalvin Manor and San Pablo.

Who We Are

For almost 100 years, the ACLU has worked to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed by the Constitution and laws of the United States. The ACLU protects your freedom through a nationwide network of staffed offices in every state, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico. Our regional ACLU affiliate is the ACLU of Northern California, an enduring guardian of justice, fairness, equality, and freedom, working to protect and advance civil liberties for all Californians. The Berkeley/North East Bay Chapter is under the auspices of the ACLU of Northern California.

Chapters support the organization in three core ways:

Chapters are the ACLU's eyes and ears in their home communities, alerting us to questionable choices made by school boards, city councils, county boards of supervisors, law enforcement, and other local decision-making bodies.

Chapters extend the reach of the ACLU throughout the region by organizing educational events, recruiting new members, and supporting the local efforts of our coalition partners.

Chapters keep lawmakers on their toes by representing ACLU priorities and issues in meetings and legislative hearings with their local, state, and federal elected officials.

Join the ACLU

Be a card-carrying ACLU member! You can become an annual member for just $20/year (or less if you are a student or have a limited income). You'll be part of the national ACLU, the Northern California affiliate, and your local chapter.

Donate to the ACLU

You can defend and advance civil liberties by donating to either the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) or the ACLU Foundation. Gifts to the ACLU allow us the greatest flexibility in our work. While not tax deductible, they advance our extensive litigation, communications and public education programs. They also enable us to advocate and lobby in legislatures at the federal and local level to advance civil liberties.

Make a Tax-Deductible Gift to the ACLU Foundation

If you prefer to make a tax-deductible gift, we encourage you to support the ACLU Foundation. Gifts to the Foundation support our litigation, communications, and public education efforts, but by law, they cannot be used for legislative initiatives. Make your tax-deductible donation today and it will provide the resources necessary to respond to widespread assaults on fundamental freedoms.
